Dear friends, Happy New Year! Although by the time you have read this letter I suspect many New Year resolutions will have already been broken! In the Methodist Church we make our annual resolution in the Covenant Service. There is something reassuring about using the service each year; the only problem is that it can be too general in its approach. The phrase “put me to doing, put me to suffering”, in the original version or “when there is work for me and when there is none”, in the modern version does not challenge us with the specific tasks we can do in the life of the church. Sometimes we need a specific task or goal in life, something to focus on whether that is to get back to your pre-Christmas weight or attempt to learn a new skill rather than just ‘do something different this year’. This year will be an important one in the life of our church as we celebrate 80 years in the present church building we will also recognise all the hard work that a small group of people have put into refurbishing the entire premises, but more than that I hope it will be a year when we can all think about the specific tasks or roles we can undertake in the life of the church. To help us in this we will be running a campaign called ‘Count Me In’ which will help us to focus on specific areas of life in the church and the ways we can help and be involved. So please look out for further information in the coming weeks. Finally I hope that 2016 will be a good year for us all and that when we look back in a year’s time we will do so with a sense of satisfaction and achievement. O that each in the day of his coming will say: “I have fought my way through, I have finished the work that you gave me to do!” Charles Wesley (Singing the Faith 460, verse 5) Grace and peace to you Alan

Dear friends, As you will be aware there are a number of events taking place to celebrate the life of our church and of our circuit.  We celebrrated with our friends at Erdington Methodist Church the completion of the refurbishment program of their worship area and new entrance. We will be celebrating as a circuit our new vision for the futuire on September 25th with a morning circuit service at Bishop Walsh School at Wylde Green. This is something of a new venture for a circuit that in the past have held their joint services in an evening, but this gives and opportunity for the younger families of the circuit to join in our circuit activities. There will be a praise party for the children, led by children’s evangelist John Hardwick, whilst the main service will be led by people from the circuit with the preacher being Rev Steven Poxon a former missionary and past President of the Methodist Church. Steven has a great heart for mission and evangelism and a desire to see churches grow in new and different ways. Here at South Parade we will be celebrating in September the completion of the extensive refurbishment programme of all our church premises which will be taken by Rev David Butterworth the chaplain to the NEC group who is developing the ‘Chaplaincy Everywhere” project in the Birmingham Methodist District. These events are varied and exciting but they emphasise one thing - we are all part of God’s mission in the world. An American Christian writer once said ‘The church does not have a mission. It is God’s mission which has a church’. If we are committed to our church we are committed to God’s mission. With the last Newsletter you will have received a letter about ‘Count Me In’ at our last Cafe Church we thought about how we use our time and talents in the service of the church and with this edition you will find a ‘Count Me In’ response form with will give specific areas in the life of the church where we need people to help. In addition to this we are hoping to hold a coffee morning where people can explore further what is needed with those of the church who are involved in different areas of the churches life so please looks out for details of that day. I hope you will consider prayerfully how we all can respond to God’s call to be part of his great and wonderful mission in our society today. Grace and peace to you Alan.
